Early Beginnings

Early Beginnings: The Prelude to AI

AI did not appear suddenly – its origin can be traced back to ancient times, and it has gone through a long process of accumulation. Let’s explore the "ancestors" of AI together! 🏛️

(1)Ancient Imagination: The "Primitive Form" of AI

Long ago, humans began to imagine "intelligent machines" that could work like humans. Here are some classic examples:

Time Period

Region/Myth

AI-like Imagination

Brief Introduction

Ancient Greece

Greek Mythology

Talos (Bronze Giant)

A giant made of bronze, created by the god Hephaestus. It could walk around the island of Crete, guard the island, and throw boulders at enemies – like a "mythical robot"!

Ancient China

Han Dynasty

Wooden Puppets (Yingwu)

The inventor Zhang Heng made wooden puppets that could sing, dance, and even act – they were like the "early robots" in ancient China, simulating human movements and behaviors.

Medieval Europe

Mechanical Inventions

Mechanical Knights

Craftsmen made mechanical knights that could walk and swing swords by using gears and springs – it was a preliminary attempt to make "intelligent machines" with mechanical power.

📝 Note: These ancient "intelligent machines" are not real AI – they are just mechanical devices or mythical imaginations. But they laid the foundation for human beings to pursue "machine intelligence"!

(2)Pioneers of Modern AI: Laying the Foundation

In the 20th century, with the development of mathematics, physics, and computer science, AI began to move from imagination to reality. Here are two key pioneers you must know! 🌟

Alan Turing is known as the "Father of Computer Science" and the "Father of AI". He proposed the famous Turing Test in 1950, which is a key standard to judge whether a machine has "intelligence".

What is the Turing Test?: Let a human judge communicate with a machine and another human through text. If the human cannot distinguish which one is the machine, then the machine passes the Turing Test and is considered to have "intelligent behavior".

Fun fact: Turing also invented the "Turing Machine", which is the prototype of modern computers – without him, there would be no AI we have today! 🖥️

John McCarthy is the person who first proposed the term "Artificial Intelligence"! In 1956, he organized the famous Dartmouth Conference, where he officially named this field "Artificial Intelligence (AI)". This conference is regarded as the "birthplace of AI" – it is like the "birthday party" of AI! 🎂

(3)Early Mechanical and Computational Devices

Before the birth of modern computers, there were some devices that laid the foundation for AI. Let’s take a look at two representative ones:

  • Analytical Engine (1837): Invented by Charles Babbage, it is the prototype of the modern computer. It could perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and even store data – it was like a "mechanical brain"! 🧮

  • ENIAC (1946): The world’s first electronic digital computer. It was huge (occupying a whole room) and could calculate 5,000 additions per second – it laid the hardware foundation for AI’s data processing.

Q&A: Solve Your Doubts

Now it’s your turn to ask questions! 🚩 You can raise any questions about the early history of AI, such as:

  • Why did the ancient Greeks imagine the Bronze Giant Talos?

  • Can the Turing Test really prove that a machine has intelligence?

  • What other early devices are related to AI?

Let’s discuss together and solve your doubts one by one! Remember: There are no "silly questions" in the process of exploring AI – every question is a step forward! 💪
